The Medical Office Term of the Week is:

Contraindication

Contraindication refers to a condition that influences the decision to discontinue, delay, or cancel a course of treatment or a certain medical procedure due the increased risk of complication.

Be sure to properly code your claim for maximum reimbursement.

  • Report the appropriate HCPCS/CPT code associated with the procedure that was discontinued.
  • Append the modifier 53 to indicate the procedure was discontinued after the induction of anesthesia.
  • Make sure to use the appropriate ICD-9 code, V64.1, to indicate the surgical or other procedure was discontinued due to contraindication.
