There is still time to get claims in to Medicare with dates of service from October 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009 without being denied for timely filing. You have until December 31, 2010 to get any old claims paid if you act fast.
Prior to January 1, 2010, providers had over a year to submit medical claims to Medicare. Before the change, claims could be submitted for services rendered during the 1st nine months of the calendar year by December 31st of the following year. For services rendered during the last three months of the calendar year, providers could submit the claim by December 31st of the second following year.
Effective January 1, 2010, CMS reduced the timely filing limit for Medicare claim submission to one calendar year from the date of service. If your claim is not received by the deadline, your claim will be denied.
Claims that deny due to timely filing do not meet the initial determination requirement and are not subject to appeal.
